Liquid Gold or a Trend?
Bone broth has been making waves in the pet world, and for damn good reason! This isn’t just some overhyped fad, bone broth is packed with benefits for dogs of all ages. Whether your pup is an energetic working breed, a senior needing some joint support, or just a spoiled little gremlin who deserves the best, bone broth is a game-changer.
What the Hell is Bone Broth?
Bone broth is basically liquid gold made by simmering animal bones, connective tissues and sometimes a few dog-friendly veggies for hours (or even days). This slow-cooking process pulls out all the good stuff like collagen, gelatin, amino acids, glucosamine and minerals, that can aid in supporting your dog’s overall health.
Why Should Your Dog Be Drinking This Stuff?
1. Joint & Bone Health
The glucosamine, chondroitin and collagen help keep those joints lubed up and working smoothly, which is especially great for senior dogs or high-energy breeds that put a lot of strain on their bodies.
2. Gut & Digestion Support
Got a dog with a sensitive stomach? Bone broth contains gelatin, which helps protect and heal the gut lining. This means fewer tummy troubles, better digestion, and firmer poops (because let’s be honest, we all check).
3. Immune System Boost
Bone broth is loaded with amino acids like arginine and glycine that help reduce inflammation and support a strong immune system. Sick dog? Post-surgery pup? Bone broth can be a great addition to help them bounce back.
4. Hydration Hero
Some dogs are weird about drinking water, but bone broth? They’ll slurp that up like it’s a gourmet treat. It’s a great way to keep your pup hydrated, especially in hot weather or if they’re recovering from an illness.
5. Picky Eater Approved
Got a fussy eater who turns their nose up at certain foods? Pour some bone broth over, and suddenly, it’s a five-star meal. Even the divas of the dog world won’t say no to this flavour boost.
How to Make Bone Broth for Your Dog
Making bone broth at home is easy as hell. Here’s what you need:
Raw bones (beef, chicken, turkey, lamb, whatever you’ve got, just make sure they’re meaty and full of connective tissue)
Water (obviously)
Apple cider vinegar (helps draw out the nutrients)
Optional dog-safe veggies (carrots, celery, pumpkin)
Instructions:
Throw the bones into a big-ass pot, slow cooker, or Instant Pot.
Add enough water to fully cover the bones.
Splash in some apple cider vinegar (a couple of tablespoons should do the trick).
Simmer on low for at least 12 hours (or up to 24-48 hours for max benefits). If using an Instant Pot, pressure cook for 3-4 hours.
Strain out the bones (super important, cooked bones are a choking hazard!).
Let it cool, then store in the fridge for up to 7 days or freeze for longer storage.
How to Feed Bone Broth to Your Dog
As a Meal Topper – Pour it over their food for a flavor and nutrient boost.
As a Treat – Serve it as a warm broth on cold days or frozen as pupsicles in summer.
For Sick or Senior Dogs – Give small amounts to encourage eating and hydration.
Store-Bought vs. Homemade Bone Broth
If you’re feeling lazy (no judgment), you can buy pre-made bone broth. Just read the damn label. Many store-bought options have added salt or preservatives that aren’t safe for dogs. Look for one made specifically for pets or with minimal ingredients.
